As a fashion photography studio, we know inclusivity is now a crucial part of the modelling industry. And thanks to social media, the pushback against unrealistic beauty standards has grown more pronounced over the years. here is a recent interview with a Korean model: 

''When I was starting to explore my identity in my teens, I held on to the mantra ‘No one can make you feel inferior without your consent’ – a little cliched, but the quote by the former first lady of the United States Eleanor Roosevelt reminded me that what determines my value is not my looks or my gender expression, but how I put myself out there and the things I accomplish.

I was also really into fashion so, when I was 15, I pestered my dad to get me a sewing machine. I made clothes and dresses out of newspapers and old towels, and modelled the outfits.

Today, I am proud to have worked with major publications such as Vogue, Female, Elle and Men’s Folio. I really like the recent editorials I have done, where I am modelling both menswear and womenswear in different publications.''

Seaking to TS Studios she continues: ''There was a period of time when my parents did not understand, but things are better now. My mum comes to me for styling tips.

It is interesting to see how the modelling industry has evolved. When I first started modelling, it was difficult to find an agency that wanted to represent me, much less brands that wanted to work with me. I recently made the shortlist to model for a high jewellery brand, when before, I would not have been considered.

Probably the toughest thing, and something I am still working on, is the battle I have with myself. I used to actively censor myself or miss opportunities because I would think, ‘I’m not gonna get that, I’m not X enough or Y enough.’

People are becoming more receptive about the idea of body positivity in the late 2010s, since this subject is now more prevalent on social media. Plus-sized male models such as Zach Miko, Raul Samuels and Cristian Paris have inspired me to step out of my comfort zone.

We see plenty of plus-sized female models, but not men. As toxic masculinity reigns, plus-sized men are not considered worthy enough to be in fashion or deemed as desirable. I believe it will take some time for Singapore to catch up with this image shift.''

 Iconic Model of the Week: Twiggy

Welcome back to the TS Studios photography blogs From the runway to the big screen.  Twiggy, the Swinging ’60s supermodel, is the muse behind Sadie Frost’s next feature documentary, “Twiggy.” Production on the film has started with Studio Soho, part of the Film Soho group. TS Studios is a fashion photography studio based in London, Manchester and Birmingham. They work with all different types of models of all ages and experience levels.

The film is set to be released theatrically in the U.K. and Ireland in 2023 with Terry Newman, author of “Harry Styles: and the Clothes He Wear,” and “Legendary Authors and the Clothes They Wore,” on board as writer, researcher and interviewee, along with Erin O’Connor, Paul McCartney, Lulu, Poppy Delevingne, Brooke Shields, Pattie Boyd and Zandra Rhodes.

Filming will take place in London and New York with the supermodel synonymous with big eyes, long eyelashes and short hair recreating key moments from her life in Film Soho’s virtual production stage, V-Studios. Exciting news indeed, celebrating an icon in modelling.

At the age of 16, Twiggy was featured in the British newspaper Daily Express with her signature hair. The image was caption: “The Cockney kid with a face to launch a thousand shapes…and she’s only 16.” In 1970, four years into her modeling career, she retired to pursue acting and famously said “You can’t be a clothes hanger for your entire life.” We all loved Twiggy and celebrate her life.

Following Elon Musk’s acquisition, advertisers have raised concerns about the risks of loosening content moderation on the site. This has caused top fashion brand Balenciaga to unfollow Twitter itself. Balenciaga removed its Twitter account, becoming the first major fashion brand to leave the social media platform amid mounting concern over new owner Elon Musk’s vision for the site in the future.

Kim Kardashian wore Balenciaga to the 11th Annual LACMA Art + Film Gala in November 2022. In other news Dior has reissued the mini Lady Dior handbag carried by Princess Diana at the Met Gala in 1996. That year, the Costume Institute celebrated the work of Christian Dior, and the Princess of Wales attended wearing John Galliano’s first haute couture design for the French fashion house.

The updated version of her blue satin bag with rhinestone accessories hit stores this week. Priced at 5,000 euros, it is available in a limited edition of 200 pieces. How to become a Model

Practice model poses in front of the camera 

The next step to know how to start modeling is to practice in front of the camera. For example, the supermodels you see in gorgeous magazine photos did not just sit in front of a camera and get lucky when a highly skilled fashion photographer took a picture of them. They’ve worked with the photographer to create a masterpiece. Both equally skilled in their respective trade, a model will use her posing, facial expressions, and artistic intuition to help create the photographer's vision. Having the right posing skills is an essential requirement for becoming a model.

Get a killer modeling portfolio 

For example, one of the most critical steps to become a model and to make a stable career is to have a well-rounded modeling portfolio that showcases your strong points through high-quality, stunning images. Mainly, one of the first requirements from a model that agencies and clients will look at to make a great first impression is the modeling portfolio. It helps to have both an online version (your modeling portfolio website) that you can send to anyone via an email and a printed version, so that you can show them when you meet someone face to face. 

Find the right modeling agency 

Modeling agencies are looking for the most simple and natural photos possible so that they can see you for YOU. Submit snapshots of you wearing little to no makeup: a light sweep of foundation and mascara at the most. Do not style your hair (but do make sure it is clean), and include photos of your hair down, and also of your hair up, pulled away from your face. The background needs to be plain and not distracting (standing against a plain wall works best). Take the photos using natural light; a friend can easily play photographer for you.

Do your research about the modeling agency you sign up with 

The main thing you need to do before submitting to every modeling agency on earth and seeing if anything sticks, do your research! Make a list. First, and most importantly, is this agency legit? Can their business be easily verified, and do they have any bad reviews? Is this modeling agency currently accepting models with your look and stats? What is the modeling agency's submission process (specific guidelines vary by agency, but you should be able to find this info on their website)? Who are the agency's past and present models? Consider these things first before choosing which agency you want to represent you.

Decide on the purpose and story

 An image can communicate so many more messages than just text. For example, to make an impactful photoshoot, decide on the purpose and how the story will be told. This will ensure your photoshoot has a successful purpose/storyline.

Think about the style and focal points 

 To pique interest, ensure there’s a variety of subjects and focal points. Vary the viewpoint, take scene and close-up settings, this will allow the audience to see your viewpoint and clear focal setup.

Use a mood board

 Professional photographers may be able to point and shoot, but most charity managers don’t have that expertise. To get a sense of the kind of photoshoot you want to organize, create a mood board to allow your ideas flow. For example, Pinterest is a platform that can help managers search and pin target images, which will allow you to see clear ideas to develop over time, if needed to change or add. 

Concepts for fundraising

The photoshoot can be informal or part of another event. For example, opportune moments during a fundraising race, pub quiz, or social event paints an honest and fun image for charities. This will really boost the event, and also make sure to take rough photos and videos, just to ensure you have different moods across the shoot for your concept. This content can be valuable for behind-the-scenes too, just to get the perfect shot into the real scene. 

What’s the location? 

Location is very important, particularly in terms of lighting, mood, and background. For example, scouting a place that reflects the charity might include traveling outside of the office, another city, or abroad. This way you get to have the right mood set across your scene whilst ensuring the right background, and light are both equally set. 

Choosing a photoshoot set 

You might decide there’s no need to be on location and that a set works best. For example, basic digital and hardware work well for charities on a shoestring budget. In terms of equipment, a tripod, lighting, and background yields the cleanest shots.

 As with most makeup looks and techniques, it all starts with a well-prepped base. How you prep your skin will help your makeup last and stay put for hours longer. The celeb makeup artist Gisele Bündchenhas worked with a lot of brands and professionals such as Julianne Hough. “A good hydrating moisturizer that’s not too oily is key,” she says, recommending her go-to, the La Potion Infinie from Argentum Apothecary. “Moisturized skin will allow for the makeup to grip and last longer.”

“You don’t want heavy layers on your skin,” adds celebrity makeup artist Emma White Turle, who counts Carey Mulligan and Niall Horan as clients, among many others. “So light, oil-free products that have a good intense pigment are my personal favorites.”

As this concept relates to skin care, more isn’t always more. Recommends using an SPF product that is also moisturizing, which can help prevent “the overheating feeling you might have when your skin is overloaded with products.” Starting with a vitamin C serum and then applying an SPF moisturizer like Black Girl Sunscreen Broad Spectrum or a product with an anti UVA/UVB shield like the Sisley Paris All Day All Year, both of which leave a radiant finish to the skin.

This year, contestants on the TV show Love Island will be clad in secondhand rather than new clothing, a pivot away from fast fashion that could influence more shopping habits in fans. Love Island will return to televisions next week, and with it, an array of colorful bikinis and skintight outfits that viewers will seek out in order to dress like their favorite Islanders.

For the past three years, Love Island has partnered with online fast fashion brands like: I Saw it First, which sponsored the show and provided clothes for contestants, however this year, Love Island will be sponsored by: eBay, and contestants will be dressed in secondhand outfits on screen.

Sustainability advocates will welcome the change, having criticized the show for encouraging fast fashion consumption. In June 2019, the online fashion retailer Missguided advertised a £1 bikini during a commercial break for Love Island. Former Love Island contestants were used as models to promote the bikini, cementing the link between fast fashion and reality television.

Streetwear - fashionable casual fashion birthed in the 1980s and popularized in the 90s by hip hop and surf culture - was pioneered by notable designers like Shawn Stussy and Dapper Dan.

Diversity is the talk of the fashion world at the moment. Conde Nast just announced their plans to launch a Philippine edition of their global fashion magazine Vogue, and British Vogue’s February cover featuring nine African models was hailed as “redefining what it means to be a fashion model”.

 The pandemic has created an unstable landscape in which all players, big and small, are fighting for our attention and our money. And the winners it seems, are those who are embracing ‘diversity’ — whatever that means. Much has been made of fashion’s ‘racial reckoning’ in light of 2020’s global protests for racial justice, which prompted revelations of injustice and indignities suffered by people of color at all levels and branches of the fashion industry.

 The subsequent outrage and demands for restitution prompted promises from the industry to do better — although two years later, the jury remains out on to what extent that promise has been kept. However, the fashion industry’s problems run much deeper than a desperate need for representation at all levels and a healthy work environment for people of color. If lasting change is the goal, then it is necessary to dissect the idea of fashion itself, and the meanings it creates for how we see the world.
